It’s official – Wolfmother split

August 7, 2008 by

The official site just sent this statement. No comment from me for now.

Grammy Award winning rock band Wolfmother has announced the resignation of bass/keyboard player Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett effective immediately.

Singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale now plans to find other musicians over coming months and to then begin making a new Wolfmother album.

Wolfmother toured the world virtually non-stop through 2006 and early 2007 on the back of their acclaimed self titled debut album. Longstanding frictions within the group then lead them to take an extended break during the second half of 2007 to consider their future.

In early 2008 they regrouped and worked on new material. Initially encouraged by those sessions, they committed to a handful of live shows to ‘road test’ the new songs and to try to find a way forward.

Those dates concluded with a headlining slot last Sunday at the Splendour In The Grass Festival in Australia’s Byron Bay where rumours circulated about possible lineup changes.

Following that show Chris Ross decided to announce that he was leaving the band due to irreconcilable personal and musical differences. Myles Heskett has also decided to leave the band rather than continuing as part of a changed lineup. The pair has been working together on songs for some time and they plan to focus their energies on that new project in the future.

Wolfmother’s self titled debut album is one of the most successful Australian rock releases this century. It has sold over 1.3 million copies and received multiple ARIA Awards and a Grammy – making them the first Aussie band to receive such an award in 25 years. Other highlights for the group have included appearances at just about every major music festival in the world, sharing stages with Pearl Jam, The Who and The Strokes, and a special performance inducting the legendary Led Zeppelin into the UK’s Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame.

Andrew Stockdale, Myles Heskett and Chris Ross will make no public statements at this time except to say that they are each really looking forward to making their new music over the years ahead.

In the meantime they simply ask all Wolfmother fans to please understand that in spite of their best efforts over a long period of time, they just could not find a harmonious way to work together and that has lead to the decisions announced today.

I can fortunately say that I saw them play with Pearl Jam here in Spain. It was my first contact with Wolfmother and since then I have played their CD constantly. They instantly became one of my favorite groups and I have been hanging to get my hands on new material. This is the first new group I’ve gotten hooked on in years and to be honest I think that it’s a damn shame they’ve split up. In my opinion, they were destined to greatness and in years will be remembered as legends. For us fans however I feel that, even if Andrew gets new musicians the vibe will never be the same. I however will always remember them performing Baba O’relly on stage with Pearl Jam and Andrews intense Duo ( a la Chris Cornell) on Stage with Eddie Vedder singing the Temple of the dog classic Hungerstrike.
    Wolfmother RIP.

Try listening to Led Zeppelin. It’s the same stuff, only they did it first. Wolfmother sucks.

  5. scot on August 8th, 2008 12:04 pm

    fuck off anonymous!

    wolfmother can still achieve greatness

i know that the loss of myles and chris is a disarster but there is still some hope.

sure wat they did to the fans is shit but we just have to except the position that they’re in.

    wtf would u do?!!?

I feel more magic with Wolfmother than Led Zeppelin. I actually saw Wolfmother live. I never had a chance to see Zeppelin live. Led Zeppelin just seemed like a look at me fest. Page was fuckin’ full of himself. Plus Wolfmother is like a classic rock band for a new generation. They are carrying on the crown and keeping classic rock alive. Believe it or not anonymous, Wolfmother and Led Zeppelin are two very different things. Wolfmother just has small hints and elements of Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Things like the fuzzed out guitars and Pentatonic scales.

Guys… I play Drums, if you’re thinking of replacing the missing links! Never give up Guys!!!

  8. jimmi on August 8th, 2008 9:24 pm

who ever doesn’t have the bollock to put a name or email and just puts Anonymous as their name… do everyone a favour and kill yourself.. saves us all a task.
but seriously to all normal people. i am just glad that they announced the split because i would much prefer to see a band that are enjoying gigs and putting more energy rather than a disfunctional band who no longer want to put as much energy into it..
mac and cheeses new band is called… Doom Buggy.. not a good name but they have some videos already on youtube which has live performances from them! nice!
and our beloved wolfmother is not dead and the member that made wolfmother is still in it.
also from a recent story that mac and cheeses never turned up to their gigs at the start and andrew providing all the equipment makes me want to say.. fuck myles and chris. if its true.

  9. andrew on August 8th, 2008 10:27 pm

all im gonna say is that it still isn’t gonna be the same without the original two members. you can’t create the same sound with different musicians and the new wolfmother just won’t be the same. i don’t want new wolfmother, i want old wolfmother.

  10. matt on August 9th, 2008 1:10 am

Come on Guys cheer up Andrew makes up the main sound of wolfmother with his voice and riffs. With him fronting the band I don’t think they will deviate much from their original sound.

  11. VancoverDan on August 9th, 2008 3:21 am

yah, jimmi I checked out Myles and Chris’ band doom buggy and I gotta say the name sucks and their music isn’t great either. Thx for the heads up

  12. Ethan on August 9th, 2008 3:26 am

andrew is the band. he started the band, he wrote the songs and is the lead member. the sound will stay the same with andrew still there. them breaking up is better then them lying to us, wasting our time waiting, and them sucking because theyre not getting along. at least now there is progress

  13. frank on August 9th, 2008 5:48 am upset as i am..ill agree withthat…andrew is a saint for not throwing in the towel

i agree..fuck mac and cheese..andrew was the only truly vocal and enthusiastic member of the bad..good on him

lestockdale is the LONE WOLF…and im glad hes still in it

  14. drew on August 9th, 2008 5:52 am

Myles and chris should be grateful for what they have got, they are in a sucsessful band and have got thousands of fans around. Most people would give everything to be where they are; they are just going to give it up????and who cares if andrew is getting all of the fame as long as you are getting equal amounts of money then thats it ok.

pretty much depressed when i read it!!
    and im still feeling it.

some of you might say “no its not the end of wolfmother”

BULLSHIT, bring in more band mates..its still not the same thing, Wolfmother was one of them rare bands u see once in a life time and they CANNOT be replaced..its just unthinkable

i wouldve really liked them to do a press confence of some sort instead of finding out in some dingy newspaper article with NO imformation what so ever!

    R.I.P the ORIGINAL Wolfmother
    (andrew, chris & myles)

  26. Phil on August 10th, 2008 3:03 pm

I´m still shocked. How could they to sth. like this.

  27. derek on August 11th, 2008 4:21 am

wow this is fucking ridiculous i cant believe this shit.
one of the greatest bands the rock world has ever seen this is unbelievable
if stolkdale continues…. good for him ya know? i always thought he was the master mind behind most of the music anyway?

  29. Nick on August 12th, 2008 12:25 am

Why!? I hope this new Wolfmother is as good as the last.

  30. waltair on August 12th, 2008 7:44 am

many bands have replayced bandmembers – look at motorhead. the only existing original member is lemmy. but they are still alive. so i think, wolfmother will also survive – with two other members. that’s rock’n’roll

  31. Dave on August 12th, 2008 11:51 am

pretty dumb really – they were on top of the world, achieved mega success, and then blew it. happens to all new aussie bands these days.

if andrew had the balls to keep it going, i reckon heskett should’ve stayyed – just cause 1 person leaves doesnt mean you all go.

anyway, its still the same songs for the next album, just different members. at least they didnt totally split, be thankful i guess.

  32. gabster on August 13th, 2008 8:54 pm

so uumm….can someone just shoot me cus i dont want to listen to all the horrible music that is coming out. i can’t stand all these wannabe punk bands that use all that damn make up and call themselves rockers and whine about girls and break-ups and all that sissy shit. Wolfmother was different than all those and really is freaking depressing to see them break up. i should have seen them in san diego when they came….FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!! one love everybody.

  33. gabster on August 13th, 2008 9:01 pm

but wait is there still an album coming out?? I mean they had the songs finished right? anyone know for sure?? i dont want to hear any of this “well i heard from someone” . I need facts peeps!!

  34. Minglewood on August 13th, 2008 11:21 pm

Figures as much, I’ve only been waiting for two years for them to make it back to Boston. “Long standing differences” my ass! They released ONE album!

I guess we’ll be able to see the “reunion” tour after they all realize that they can’t do it seperately. They’ll wake up once their cash dwindles.

You’ll see. Anyone care to take my bet? Less than two years, original Wolfmother with bright smiling faces? Sucker bet.

  35. drbob222 on August 17th, 2008 12:37 pm

So wait is Stockdale completely carrying on the band with new musicians or just bringing in new people to make the second album and then calling Wolfmother quits?

  36. Nate on August 20th, 2008 4:26 am

I willing to bet that some of this has to do with what way the band shouldve gone in for the next record. If this is true im wondering if Andrew is the more retro one in the group? Will the music change now? I sure hope not. He better find a hammond B3 player.

  37. Carlos Maffrand on August 20th, 2008 7:47 pm

    Fuck… so sad.

RIP Wolfmother, i never go to listen the band with other members or the other band of Chris and Myles.

They were good. Led-Clones, but good. I like the flashbacks from past rock centuries…they keep history alive…now one more addition to the r´n r graveyard. wolfmother without those two other guys.. I question that to function.
