Rumour time: Raconteurs members to join? Feb 09 album?

August 26, 2008 by chimaera

We know that Andrew Stockdale has been looking for new band members to replace Chris and Myles. We heard rumours about an Australian musician, and rumours about American musicians.

Today we hear from our Australian fans that music station Triple J have mentioned on air that they believe the rhythm section from The Raconteurs (Saboteurs for you Aussies) will join Andrew in forming the new Wolfmother.

Forum member motherlovin confirmed the rumour (though we don’t know his source, he was right about previous rumours) and stated for certain that Jack White won’t be involved.

So I imagine that Patrick Keeler will definitely be one member, being the drummer, and either one or both of Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence.

I am still working out in my head how this would be. On one hand it’s awesome news because I love the Raconteurs music and their albums are regularly played on my Walkman. On the other there’s a risk that the different style to what we’ve become used to changes the band beyond recognition - but I am reassured by the fact that Jack White won’t be involved that Andrew will retain control of the sound and move the band forwards in the way he has previously.

Whether the Raconteurs will continue, with members spanning both bands, is yet to be seen. For sure if the new Wolfmother wants to tour anything like they have done in the past I can’t see that being possible. Maybe Jack White has decided his experiment with a new band has run its course and he’ll fold it up, leaving the other members free to pursue new interests also.

In other rumour news, the Modular website has a mock newspaper article that states a Feb 09 release for the album. That in itself isn’t too exciting because of the nature of the article (who’s to say that any of it is true). But in the news section, they also mention an early ‘09 release, so it’s on the horizon at least. Not soon enough for us fans that have been waiting years already, but at least planned for.

Source
Singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale will carry on Wolfmother and has our full support as we now embark on Wolfmother - Phase II. Stockdale has been developing new material and is set to connect with producer Dave Sardy (producer of the debut self-titled LP) in LA before the end of the year to sew the seeds of a new album. The fruits of these sessions will hopefully see a new Wolfmother album in early 2009.

    reconteurs aye?
as long as wolfmother sounds like wolfmother then im cool

  2. mitchell on August 26th, 2008 1:49 pm

Not very likely. The Raconteurs’ rhythm section (Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence) should be rejoining The Greenhornes if anything, considering they’ve been members of The Greenhornes for over ten years and have not released an album in a while.

  3. COTW on August 26th, 2008 3:24 pm

    According to wikipedia Jack White:

“Jack has said that The White Stripes are already working on their seventh album” Meg has recovered from her anxiety so a white stripe tour might be happenign afterwards

“it has been suggested that he is beginning work on a new musical group”

This certainly leaves the rest of the Raconteurs idol, Im gonna believe motherlovin this time. Im not sure if Brendan Benson will be a member but i bet the bass and drummer will be as they stick together.

  4. schwansz on August 26th, 2008 3:37 pm

whoever is joining the new line-up is just hope will keep there unique and amazing sound…..and i really hope violence of the sun, back round, monolith and inside the mountain will be on the album….fucking amazing songs

  5. frank on August 26th, 2008 4:26 pm

the biggest concern obviously is that new members my CHANGE wolfmthers sound…i think Stockdale is smart enough to not let that happen…but its still a scary thought
i just hope whoever joins wolfmother does exactly as their told lol and doest try to “take the band in a new direction”…fuck that

  6. Fly on August 26th, 2008 4:31 pm

Stockdale was taking Wolfmother in a new direction anyways, so this is cool. I got excited when i saw “Raconteurs” up there. I was thinking Jack White :) The two Greenhorns guys are great too though. Nice choice

  7. Pat on August 26th, 2008 6:33 pm

Wait, this doesn’t make sense? You still have a Walkman? Time for an upgrade! lol

  8. ugh on August 26th, 2008 7:02 pm

i would so much rather keeler/lawrence to make another greenhornes album. please.

  9. frank on August 26th, 2008 8:36 pm

wat doyou mean he was taking them in a new direction anyways???? how many times did stockdale say in interviews hes gonna give us more of their original ound…wolfmother found their niche…if he changes their sond and just becomes some other shitty alternative rock band…the end..then their really done

  10. moon knight on August 26th, 2008 9:10 pm

I think if it does happen, the reason is because Jack will be working with Meg in 09 on the White Stripes. I wouldn’t say that the Raconteurs are breaking up, I think it will be an alternating thing, if it even happens.

  11. chimaera on August 26th, 2008 9:24 pm

Pat, come on, I don’t mean the old tape deck - I think you are the one living in the past. I mean this: http://snurl.com/3k1j1

  12. auspicepresider on August 27th, 2008 5:26 am

oh! and one time i saw that andrew stocky said the white stripes were an influence on their myspace page…and consolers of the lonley, with jack singing there…im lookin forward to this fusion!^_^

  13. auspicepresider on August 27th, 2008 5:32 am

Tame Impala, guys…they just signed with modular. they are NOT wolfmother ,of course, although they could be spiritual sisters, really:) theyd be inseperable if they were ever to be linked through similar relaxy, music-y attitudes….they seem cool (please dont call me a blashphemer!!)

  14. Rookie on August 27th, 2008 8:14 pm

^hey, auspicepresider, you do know there are forums to join in if you want to be more active with this site.

  15. Nateman on August 28th, 2008 4:09 am

The Racs and Wolfmother are like two of my fav bands, i don tknow if the Racs folk sound will mix well with the pshcycadelicness of Wolfmother but im very excited to see that this might happen

  16. Dan on August 28th, 2008 4:48 am

well, speaking of folk, folk is now listed as genre on the wolfmother myspace

  17. ordinaryboy on August 28th, 2008 7:09 am

Well, I doubt Benson would be involved because he has a strong influence on the Racs sound. Consoler of the Lonely is like a beautiful duel between White and Benson as songwriters…

Not to say he couldn’t work as a member of Wolfmother, but anyone hoping they maintain their original sound has to let go of that if he is confirmed as a new member.

  18. mikeox on August 28th, 2008 9:54 am

    Holy shit!

I love the Raconteurs (screw the Aussie way I’m supposed to say it), but what good is the Raconteurs without Jack White. Haha. Nah, sounds excellent. But that is whacked out.. the other guys will turn Wolfmother into a different band. But not for the worst…

  19. Silky on August 28th, 2008 11:22 am

    mikeox………..YOU HAVE NO IDEA

  20. James on August 30th, 2008 4:07 am

I think they’re all great musicians, they will find a way to fuse the styles and make it work. it should have the same wolfmother feel to it, which is good

  21. flurry mcferson magoo on August 30th, 2008 1:22 pm

i think The raconteurs without white will be great and with the power of stockdale will be mind bubling.

    can’t wait till feb

btw look at this pic of stockdale, looks slightly emo

  22. Wm. Chad Akers on September 1st, 2008 3:07 am

Keeler would be a perfect drummer for Wolfmother, but who’s gonna play the keyboard? Jack Lawrence does not with the Racs.

  23. BIlly on September 3rd, 2008 8:29 am

Imagine Andrew Stockdale and Jack White in the same band! Wolfmother and The White Stripes are my favourite bands! if this happened it would be the best thing ever.

  24. Tommy on September 3rd, 2008 12:44 pm

I think it will be awesome i mean if you think about it you can take andrews voice and make it into a great band and dont even get me started on his great guitar work on all of his songs I SAY WORRY NOT!!!!!! WOLFMOTHER IS HERE TO SAVE ROCK N ROLL!!!

  25. Steve on September 5th, 2008 5:30 am

Hey Andrew, forget Wolfmother. I hear Led Zeppelin is looking for a vocalist. (Would that be wicked sweet or what?)

  26. Dan on September 5th, 2008 10:48 am

Would be cool if it was just for maybe one tour, but I’d rather hear more Wolfmother then the same Led Zeppelin stuff I’ve been listening to for years.

  27. Brian R on September 7th, 2008 10:03 pm

^Steve, That would never happen, and I would be very upset if it did. I like Stocksdale and all, but he’s no Robert Plant. And the whole reason Zeppelin ended was because they weren’t going to find a replacement for
Bonzo, because they wouldn’t be Led Zeppelin with out him. Replacing Plant would be even worse, as no one can do what he does vocally. The only reason they might tour soon is because Bonham’s son is the drummer.

  28. moon knight on September 8th, 2008 4:27 am

    Brian:

Even Plant can’t do what what he did vocally. Unfortunately.

  29. scot on September 8th, 2008 8:56 am

hey I thought Richard starskey was the new drummer….or maybe i’m thinking of the who… o well

this all sounds good but I highley doubt that this whole raconteurs thing is true. I think It would be great for the drummer to join but I’m not so keen on jack lawrence as the bassist……no one can replace the legendary chris ross..

and as for the new album in feb, as much as I want it to be true, I highly doubt that aswell….

  30. Dan on September 8th, 2008 7:49 pm

“hey I thought Richard starskey was the new drummer” you been living under a rock or somethin’? lol.

And chris is far from legendary, he had good stage performance, sucks that he is gone, but he is replaceable for sure.

Myles is the one thats gonna be hard to replace, chris will be easy to replace.

  31. Dan on September 8th, 2008 8:14 pm

Well I wanna rephrase that, chris isn’t gonna be easy to replace, but it won’t be impossible

  32. moon knight on September 8th, 2008 10:22 pm

Both will be easy to replace, neither are that great.

  33. Silky on September 9th, 2008 5:27 am

moon knight, no no no no

the original wolfmother had great chemistry u boob

  34. scot on September 9th, 2008 6:30 am

sory bout the richard starskey bullshit lol

    i ment to say zack starskey… would’ve made a bit more sense…

    woops

  35. schwansz on September 30th, 2008 8:54 am

  37. thatvfvodiadi on October 1st, 2008 8:41 am

Truly, i havent had one day where i dont check here for anything, kinda lets on how much dedication and excitement is in the wolfmother supporters of the world as a whole:) come on ANDY!

  38. chimaera on October 2nd, 2008 9:56 pm

thatvfvodiadi, I wish I had something to post - I keep looking at the date of this news and thinking “man, that’d old already”.

  39. drbob222 on October 3rd, 2008 1:02 am

hey thatvfodiadi i totally agree i do the same thing i can’t wait to hear some important news about whats going on though

  40. VacouverDan on October 3rd, 2008 1:14 am

We could do another online petiion but we also don’t want to rush Andrew’s creative process

  41. thatvfvodiadi on October 3rd, 2008 2:20 am

Of Course, we shouldnt want that to go on…but, From no position in particular, for or against, i just feel like saying i think wolfmother have more supporters willing to stay with their band- without having had new material for a few years- than many other bands would that churn them out like faceless larvae. chimaera, drbob222 and VacouverDan, I dont feel like giving up hope any more than the next Wolfie, for whom the band has made a profound and personal impact im sure. i for one am kinda not listening to their stuff religiously or whatnot…im sure there hasnt been a drought like this for some time, or even ever before, would you say chimaera?

  42. Jimmi on October 4th, 2008 10:30 am

hello guys… who i don’t think are on the forums… (yet.. join)
well i am pretty much doubting this raconteurs rumour since the members in question have just started up their former band, the greenhornes… and are planning a new album next year… however.. motherlovin’ seemed to have the right idea on the raconteurs splitting up for abit….

but on the supporter issue… its probably only the hardcore wolfmother fans that know him now… they are never played on the radio in the UK or never on TV anymore… but seriously.. can’t help what has happened in the band and i know its been a rather long time since the debut album… but its something we have to deal with..

  43. Rookie on October 5th, 2008 4:18 am

Yeah, they don’t have much publicity any more in the U.S. either. i haven’t heard any of our local radio stations so much as mention anything wolfmother-related in a LONG time.

  44. Dan on October 5th, 2008 4:52 am

even when wolfmother was at it’s peak i never heard them mentioned on the radio here in the US

  45. Rookie on October 5th, 2008 3:46 pm

^eh, I remember them playing “Woman” a few times, only on one station though.

course, where you’re from makes a difference in what stations you listen to, so…

  46. a on October 5th, 2008 11:07 pm

    wolfmother WILL come back

    I hope

[...] that there is very likely to be a band right now, though of course we don’t know what the lineup looks like [...]

  65. mr.f on November 15th, 2008 12:21 pm

I’ve seen the willowz in concert, and i have a talk with the singer after, richie james follin, and he told me that he was a great friend of Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs’ Drummer) and there’s a lot of a chance about joining Wolfmother, it could be surprising and great, but nothing’s done.. let see!
