Wolfmother made to u-turn on Indonesian festival

September 23, 2010 by

Well, it seems Wolfmother are in fact going to play at the Java Rockin’Land Festival in October. Judging by the statement on the official site, and the removal of Andrew’s previous statement, the band are being forced to live up to their performance by their management, and the moral stance has been changed to a neutral one. Read the full statement below:

“Wolfmother will be playing at Java Rockin’land Festival on October 10th. This one is for the fans in Indonesia who have parted with their very own cold hard cash to see Wolfmother. We realize their are sponsors and we neither support or condemn the sponsors affiliated with the festival. We are very much looking forward to what we hope will be the first of many shows to come in Indonesia.”

I doubt that the band would have played in South Africa “for the fans” under the then totally legal apartheid. Nor would they have played “for the fans” if they’d have been born in the 19th century and a wealthy, totally legal slave trading company had stumped up the sponsorship. Nor would they be playing today if the sponsor was using child labour in a country where that was rampant. But playing to help a tobacco company promote smoking to a half-price admission for kids gig? Hey … it’s “for the fans”. Come on guys, tell your management where to go. The ethics of the cash register …..

Well to be fair to Andrew, he did try his best to take a stand on the issue. There are no doubt some contractual obligations that the band have to live up to, and if they didn’t they could lose a lot of money and respect.

    Big mistake Wolfmother.
With Big Tobacco sponsoring your event you’re just being used if you go ahead and play. Big Tobacco are totally immoral and must be fought constantly. Don’t compromise yourselves ‘cos you’ll always regret it. It’s just not worth it.
Think of the charge you’ll take by taking the high moral ground by rejecting Big Tobacco.
Just go to Utube and search “child smoking” to get Big Tobacco’s real target audience throughout Asia.
I feel so strongly about this that if you play with their sponsorship, my CD’s go off to the 2nd hand shop and I will boycott your music henceforth.

Ben, they have little to no say in whether they play or not, please read previous comments! It’s not their fault, and boycotting their music after they distinctly DID oppose it is ridiculous.

FYI, Wolfmother had just finished their free secret gig in Kuta, Bali just now. They played in a new club there, also covering The Beatles, Doors and Who. Check out Rolling Stone Indonesia website for further details.
